I would like my students to be able to access their reading list on SOL, but I am not sure what to do.

If you email your reading list to readinglists@solent.ac.uk and your information librarian, we will do the rest. We only need the unit title and unit code, but other information such as the course title, start date and the approx. no. of students taking the unit are always useful.

Can I just upload my reading list as a Word document to SOL?

You can do this but the library’s online reading lists will link students directly to digitised chapters, ebooks, online journal articles and tell them where they can locate print items in the library. Also, by informing your information librarian of which texts/resources you require, we can make sure that these are available in the library in sufficient quantity.

Is it possible to have separate reading lists for each week as opposed to one long reading list?

Yes – we can do weekly reading lists, or core and recommended reading – just let us know what you would like.

Can a variety of different types of resource on my reading list be accommodated?

Reading lists can include whichever resources you wish to direct your students to, e.g. films, images, journal articles, books.

I’ve emailed my reading list but it has not appeared on SOL – what should I do?

The library aims to process each reading list within 10 working days. If, however, they don’t appear, please contact readinglists@solent.ac.uk or your information librarian.

One of the links on my reading list is broken. What should I do?

There is a 'Report broken link' function in the vertical ellipsis or send the details to your information librarian (and copy your email to readinglists@solent.ac.uk) and we will respond as soon as possible.

How many chapters can I digitise from one book?

Currently, we can digitise up to 10% or one chapter of most UK textbooks. For more information, see our Copyright Information.

Can I just carry my reading list over for next year?

Yes. You can easily import your reading list over from an old unit into a new unit when you move over the other content. Please let us know if you intend to do this, so we can ensure everything is working and can be updated with newer editions and ebooks etc.

If you have digitised documents in your lists, you must contact us - all digitised documents need to rechecked every year to ensure they still comply with our scanning licence if they are still required for teaching.

Can I just carry forward my digitised documents for next year?

If you have digitised documents you must inform the library that these are still required. It is a breach of our copyright licence with the CLA to allow digitised documents to be carried over without checking that they still comply. We must check these each year and report their usage to the CLA.
