Introduction

The university offers two wireless services; SolentNet and EduroamSolentNet is available throughout the campus and Eduroam is available at other subscribed educational institutes. 


SolentNet

SolentNet provides an excellent level of performance in all areas, including high-density areas such as the Library where the number of simultaneous device connections is greater. As well as being fully pervasive, the wireless has been designed to be highly resilient so if one access point fails, there will be another close by to use.

How to connect to SolentNet

To connect to SolentNet just select it from your list of available wireless networks. It will ask you for a username and password.  This is the same username and password you use to connect to the Portal. You will then need to accept any certificates you’re asked to and then you should be able to connect. 

Please note, if using Android, please ensure that Phase 2 authentication is set to MSCHAP V2.

Eduroam

eduroam is a secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.  It allows students and staff from participating institutions to securely connect to the Internet for free on their personal laptops or mobile devices, not only on their own campus but also when visiting other participating institutions providing a 'Visited' service. 

eduroam provides two service types that each institution can support; 'Home' and 'Visited':

  • The Home service means that you can authenticate and gain network access at your home organisation, and at other eduroam enabled organisations that have implemented the Visited service
  • The Visited service allows visitors from organisations that have implemented a Home service to authenticate and gain network access.

Southampton Solent University is providing both a 'Home' and 'Visited' service.

  • As a visitor using the eduroam network, your login name is your email address. For support, you would need to contact your institution.
  • As a student of Solent University, use the standard wifi network 'SolentNet'.



SolentGuest

If you see this network on your device, this service provides guests and official visitors to Solent University internet access across Solent sites.

This service is not for Solent University students and you should use 'SolentNet'.

Troubleshooting

If you are experiencing issues connecting to Solent Net, it may be a certificate issue, especially on a Mac.  The following procedure may help:

  • Connect to Solent Guest / Glide or use mobile data
  • Go to cat.eduroam.org using safari. Don't use Chrome as it won't prompt to install profile.
  • Select Solent University
  • Install profile.
  • Go to settings on device.
  • On top left, there should be downloaded profile. Click on it to install. Enter passcode.
  • Enter Solent email as Username and password for eduroam.
  • Enter Username and password for SolentNet.
  • Remove Solent Guest
