• Databases & eResources

    Search the eResources to find useful journal articles, reports etc.  Some may have full text articles available online, for others you may have to check the Library Catalogue to see if full text is available.  Click to see details of usernames/passwords and subject coverage.

    The Finding Journal Articles tab will equip you with the skills to get the most out of the databases 

    Your key databases are:

    • Social Care Online - identify journal articles, books, reports etc - check library catalogue for full text availability
    • Off-campus access - no password needed.

    UPDATE:   From March 2017 users of Social Care Online will be asked to Register or login to access all the search features.  It is still free.

    •  Child Link -  one stop source for  information on children, young people and families -  legislation, policies and practice, research, statistics and more.

    • Emerald Health and Social Care - 32 full-text journals
    • Off- Campus access - Click Shibboleth login - Select UK Higher Education - Select Southampton Solent University - Enter your usual university username and password

    •  Web of Science  - not a full text database but indexes the top 12000 journals worldwide across a range of disciplines.  Find cited references and citing articles.  A real researchers database.
    • Off-Campus Access - Select Institutional (Shibboleth) Users, then, UK Federation - Choose Southampton Solent University from the drop down and then your usual university login and password.

    • ASSIA - search for journal articles via Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts - check library catalogue for full text availability 
    • Off-Campus access - enter your university username and password

    • Social Services Abstracts - search for journal articles relating to social work - check library catalogue for full text availability 
    • Off-Campus access - enter your university username and password

    • European NewsStream - access full text newspaper articles form the broadsheets and tabloids 
    • Off-Campus access - enter your university username and password


    All databases for social work - a F next to the resource name indicates that full text is available.

    When you're using the Library's  eResources and the fulltext of an article isn't there, use   to check if we have it in another database.

    Try Google Scholar by copying and pasting the title of the article into the search box.

    If there is no electronic version available:

    • use the option to check if we have a printed copy or the book or journal
    • check your online reading list for a digitised version
    • for research projects and dissertations, request books and articles we don't have via our Inter-Library loan service - we'll get them for you in a few days
