Your SEF620 Manufacturing Operations programme has provided a sound understanding of the fundamentals of Lean Six Sigma. As a Lean Six Sigma Green Belts you have demonstrated the right combination of specialist expertise, statistical analysis and structured Lean Six Sigma methodology. Green Belts play an important role identifying and implementing improvements throughout the organization by helping their project teams gather and analyse data. This helps minimise variation in order to produce higher quality goods and services. Successful Green Belts typically possess strong analytical skills and are able to communicate at all levels of an organization. This level of training is often applicable for employees working in a quality assurance role or a mid-to-upper-level management role and can help act as a stepping-stone to increased responsibilities.

Criteria

Your Green Belt training programme has provided a sound understanding of the fundamentals of Lean Six Sigma. As a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt you have demonstrated the right combination of specialist expertise, statistical analysis and structured Lean Six Sigma methodology to achieve significant improvements in performance and quality.

The award of the Green Belt certification and Moodle Badge from Solent University is presented to delegates who successfully completed the SEF620 Manufacturing Operations Module with a Minimum Grade of B1 and achieved an individual recommendation from the Module Black Belt and Company Project Sponsor / Black Belt to undertake an additional online Exam (pass mark 85%) and present an individual Green Belt Continuous Improvement Project.

The course has provided you with the theory and its practical application to enable you to:

    • Understand the principles of Lean thinking.
    • Use Lean tools in a low-risk environment.
    • Demonstrate the practical implementation of Lean tools.
    • Produce real results on real processes, where available.
    • Understand the fundamentals of Six Sigma and Design for Six Sigma.
    • Recognise best practice deployment of Six Sigma.
    • Select and apply appropriate Six Sigma methodologies to deliver robust, defect-free products and processes.
    • Use the full suite of Lean Six Sigma tools and techniques.
    • Define problems accurately.
    • Identify the key issues with a more strategic outlook.
    • Separate issues and symptoms.
    • Use a variety of Root Cause analysis tools to support improvement activities.
    • Use creative ways of generating potential solutions.
    • Understand the purpose of a Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) and its general benefits.
    • Recognise the difference between a product design FMEA and a process FMEA.
    • Recognise the importance of a team approach to FMEA completion.
    • Understand how to set the scope for an FMEA project and complete a boundary diagram.
    • Describe the inputs into an FMEA and complete a parameter diagram.
    • Explain how to document an FMEA study using a standard template.
    • Understand guidelines for rating severity, occurrence and detection.
    • Select and scope a suitable Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt project.
    • Set-up and manage a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt project in a team-based environment.
    • Plan the next step of your Lean Six Sigma learning journey.
    • Project selection and scoping.
    • Project management and reporting.
    • State how to prioritise and manage risks.

Define Phase:

    • Identify the requirements and expectations of the stakeholders and translate them into measurable improvement objects.
    • Identify the Voice of the Customer and third parties (Kano Mapping, CTQ etc.).
    • Select the company Project Team.
    • Characterise the activity / process with development of a high level Process Map (SIPOC, Spaghetti Mapping), visualise the data (Time and Motion Study, Pareto).
    • Define and set down team objectives for the project including deadlines, constraints, risks, ROI, competencies and scope of project.
    • Create a Project Charter.

Measurement Phase:

    • Measure the requirements (Y) and select one or more critical variables (X) to improve.
    • Define the data to be collected in order to pinpoint the process variation drivers (X) (Prioritisation Matrices, Cause & Effect Diagrams, FMEA).
    • Double check the fitness of the selected metrics using Measure System Analysis (MSA).
    • Develop a stratified data collection (X & Y) Plan.
    • To visualise, understand and validate the data by means of a Trend / Run Chart, Histogram, Box Chart, Pareto, Control Chart for example.
    • Measure process performance and / or process capability.

Analyse Phase:

    • Analyse the process to identify non value-adding / business value-adding or activities that need improvement.
    •  Chart potential links between X & Y with the use of Trend / Run Chart, Pareto, Control Chart, Scatter Plot for example.
    • Quantify the impact of key process variables X and their potential interactions (Hypothesis Testing, Regression Analysis and Correlation).
    • Further refine the assessed impact of key process variable by employing an experimental approach to find new factors (Design of Experiments (DOE), Regression Analysis and Hypothesis Testing).

Improve Phase:

    • Identify potential improvement opportunities / options.
    • Plan and develop a Pilot Test (e.g. use of DOE, Project Planning Methods and Resource Management Tools).
    • Develop a robust solution (FMEA Update).
    • Implement the selected solution with members of the company team.

Control Phase:

    • Review, verify and validate the improvement with a Control Plan.
    • Check and preserve the benefits with the use of Statistical Testing, Visual Management, Satisfaction Surveys and Update of Benchmark for example.
    • Capture best practice activities to institutionalise the improvements (5/6S Audits, Visual Team Meetings, and Documentation of Standard Operating Procedures etc.).
    • Capitalise on lessons learned with a project review and feedback on experience and reporting the achievements to the wider community / company.
    • Provide feedback and teamwork recognition.
